Flashing Lights.
The station recently built the graphics and segment opening for when I'm scheduled to deliver sports. There's something exciting about doing what you've always dreamed about, and that your presence is being heralded. Your name is in lights (even if only candlelights, relatively speaking). It's all at once exciting, emboldening, and humbling.
When you hear your own name—a prelude to you—it reminds you. In my last post I spoke about being driven, self-trusting, and disciplined.
- OneRepublic: "Marching On"
- Daddy Yankee: "Ven Conmigo"
- Imagine Dragons: "Radioactive"
- Nico & Vinz: "In Your Arms"
- Calvin Harris, Alesso, & Hurts: "Under Control"
- Don Omar & Juan Magán: "No Sigue Modas"
- Junkie XL & Sasha: "Breezer"
- Dash Berlin & Chris Madden: "Fool For Life"
Personally... when I hear my name spoken over the station's theme, it serves as my anchor. Everything I set out to do, everything I hope to be, is associated with me hearing exactly what the viewers hear; that opening is the reminder that Norman Seawright (the III is visible, but never spoken) is going to give his best effort for 2:30–4:30 minutes.
It's almost as if a switch is flipped. Everything disappears instantly. You forget about everything except the moment, in which you're at the daily apex of what you're meant to do. Gone are the worries of life—even if for a moment—because you know the moment isn't about you. The moment is about those you serve. When it comes down to it, you serve. No matter how much glory you get, how often you're recognized ("hey, where's your bow tie?")...the point is that you are a conduit. You move information from dozens of points labeled "A" to hundreds—thousands eventually—of points labeled "B" and at each point, there is a person whose life is in some way enriched (hopefully) by what you do.
